China builds on LNG expertise

The Chinese government says it’s vital to increase the understanding of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) amendments involving LNG ship operation and management regulations as the demand for LNG grows.

Michael R Holderness, technical director, Braemar Engineering, said: “The Chinese Government realises LNG is a good source of energy, but it must expand in this sector.”

Developed in conjunction with the Cambridge Academy of Transport and Shanghai Maritime University, the course is aimed at maritime safety administration officials, senior managers of shipping companies and instructors from maritime colleges and universities.

It offers a practical introduction to LNG and focuses on a range of elements including key operations of main propulsion of LNG carriers, loading and discharging cargos of LNG carriers.

It also looks at the key points of Flag State Control, Port State Control and industrial inspections for LNG carriers.

The first course took place from 14 to 18 October 2013 at Shanghai Maritime University. Further dates are planned for the future.
