EU financing for LNG projects in Spain

These projects will enable LNG bunkering to take place in the ports of Barcelona and Algeciras, coordinated by Enagás.

In addition to Enagás, project partners include Scale Gas – a subsidiary created through the Enagás Emprende programme, Knutsen and the port authorities of Barcelona and Bahía de Algeciras.

These projects are part of the institutional strategy ‘LNGhive2’, which is led by Puertos del Estado, in order to promote the development of the LNG market as maritime fuel and guarantee supply in ports, in compliance with Directive 94/2014 on fuels alternatives.

The initiatives will help to strengthen Spain’s position as a European benchmark in LNG bunkering, and add to the developments for small-scale supply and the adaptation of the infrastructure and logistics that are already underway with the ‘CORE LNGas hive’ project.

Both LNGhive2 and CORE LNGas hive are co-financed by the European Commission through the CEF.

Until June 2020, bunkering operations in Spain have tripled compared to the same period last year (89 operations in 2019 and 297 in 2020) and the volume of LNG supplied has almost doubled (38,663m3 in 2019 and 62,837m3 in 2020).
