First Corpus Christi LNG cargo at Ferrol

The 277m long Belgian ship Excalibur, which has a capacity of 144,000 cubic metres, carried the load belonging to Trafigura to the Regasificadora del Noroeste-operated Mugardos terminal.

Reganosa’s LNG terminal received the first Spanish importation and the second European importation of North American LNG on July 2016. This came from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG terminal in Louisiana and was transported by LNG carrier Sestao Knutsen.

Big output

The Corpus Christi LNG export terminal began operating last December. It consists of three big scale LNG production units and support infrastructure, with seven smaller trains.

It also has three storage tanks and two berths. Cheniere estimates a nominal production of 23m tonnes of LNG per year, according to Reganosa.

Reganosa said that the Port of Ferrol aims to play an important role in the increasing LNG flow that will come to Europe from North America. LNG refuelling took place at the port for the first time in March.

Cheniere estimates that the US will become the third greatest world supplier of LNG in 2020, with a production capacity of 60m tonnes per year, said Reganosa.

It added that Spain will be one of the main receivers of the North American fuel, due to its gas infrastructures and the long-term contracts signed by the main Spanish energy companies.
