First US LNG cargo imported into South Hook

Vitol SA has imported the first US LNG cargo into the Port of Milford Haven’s South Hook LNG Terminal in a move to diversify the supply of LNG into the UK market and increase utilisation of the facility’s import capacity.

The YariLNG vessel loaded at Sabine Pass LNG Liquefaction Terminal in the US and sailed to the South Hook terminal, where South Hook Gas Company Limited (South Hook Gas) regasified Vitol’s LNG cargo and delivered it into the UK natural gas grid.

South Hook LNG Terminal has been fully operational since April 2010 and is believed to provide around 20% of the UK’s natural gas needs. Shareholders of the project include Qatar Petroleum, Exxon Mobil Corporation and Total.

Port of Milford Haven is also home to the Dragon LNG terminal, owned by Petronas and Shell.

Port of Milford Haven harbourmaster Bill Hirst has previously said that LNG is helping keep hundreds of people employed at the port, although North West European ports have seen a drop-off in LNG trade in recent years, partly due to increased provision and competition.
