Greek LNG facility approved

The 25,000m2 small-scale LNG facility, part of the Poseidon Med II LNG bunkering project, is proposed to be built in the estuary area in the southwestern part of the port. The storage capacity of the plant will be 3000 cubic metres.

The Poseidon Med II programme, co-funded by the European Union, has been implemented in Greece, Italy and Cyprus. It includes six European ports – Piraeus, Patras, Heraklion, Igoumenitsa, Limassol and Venice, as well as Greece’s only existing LNG terminal in Revithoussa.

It aims to broadly adopt LNG as a safe, environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative fuel for shipping in the Eastern Mediterranean, while making Greece an international marine bunkering and distribution hub for LNG in South Eastern Europe.

Implementation of the programme requires the construction of LNG storage and transhipment projects at the ports of interest.

The programme’s commencement in 2014 was based on the results of COSTA I project, which prepared an LNG Masterplan for short sea shipping between the Mediterranean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, as well as for deep sea cruising in the North Atlantic Ocean towards the peripheral and ultra-peripheral zones of Azores and the Madeira Island.
