LNG bunkering project

Lloyd’s Register has won a contract from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to develop LNG bunkering capabilities at the port of Singapore.

Work has already started to identify the technical specifications of LNG bunkering procedures, developing of crew competency and in providing support to develop capability and infrastructure to supply LNG as a fuel for ships.

Luis Benito, global marine marketing manager, Lloyd’s Register, said: “This contract allows us to apply the knowledge and experience gained in the technical consultancy, de-risk and classification approvals we have delivered to recent innovative gas transferring systems and gas fuelled ships globally.”

Singapore Port is looking to get ready for real LNG bunkering operations, both for short-sea and deep sea shipping.

When the intial research has been completed, Lloyd’s will advise MPA on what is required to ensure that the right operational procedures are established and ensure port safety and emergency planning is provided for.

Lloyd’s has a wealth of experience in the field. Its rules developed for the use of LNG as a marine fuel were applied to the world’s first LNG fuelled cruise ship, the Viking Grace now in operation on the Baltic.

The classification society has also developed a proprietary intercative demand model to access the likely of demand for LNG fuelled newbuilds and LNG as a marine fuel up until 2025.
