LNG Hybrid Barge arrives in Hamburg

Becker Marine Systems’ LNG Hybrid Barge has arrived at its home port of Hamburg, where it will provide an external, environmentally-friendly and low-emission power supply to cruise ships.

After setting sail from its place of construction on 12 September, the barge made the 1,500km journey up the Danube, Main and Rhine rivers and arrived in Hamburg earlier this week.

The barge has a length of 76.7m, a breadth of 11.4m and a draught of around 1.7m. Delivered just two years after the start of the project, the barge is equipped with five generators with an overall output of 7.5MW, which are said to be the first marine classified LNG Caterpillar engines to be delivered to customers.

It is now dry docked at the Blohm + Voss shipyard for final outfitting and for technical testing in a multi-stage test procedure.

Following a naming ceremony in mid-October, the LNG Hybrid Barge will begin delivering energy to cruise ships as part of a joint project with AIDA Cruises and will be connected via cable to the AIDAsol for the first time on a test basis.
