LNG terminal commits to green power

Reganosa, the owner and operator of the Mugardos LNG terminal in the multipurpose Port of Ferrol, has reached an agreement with Naturgy for the 100% renewable energy supply of 25 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity with a certified guarantee of origin in 2021. 25GHh is the estimated amount of electricity required by the LNG terminal for operation in 2021.

“In this way, Reganosa redoubles its commitment to sustainability and caring for the environment, both of which are part of its decarbonisation and energy transformation strategy,” said the company.

The Mugardos terminal began operating in November 2007. It has a natural gas capacity of 3.6 billion cubic meters per year, that is 14% of the Spanish natural gas demand for 2014.

The unloading arms are connected to two tanks capable of storing up to 300,000 cubic metres of LNG and keeping liquefied natural gas at a temperature of -160º C at a pressure close to the atmospheric pressure.

The stored LNG can be loaded onto ships or trucks or sent to the regasification facilities of the plant. These facilities achieve the phase transition of the LNG to its gaseous state through two sea water vaporisers or a back-up submerged combustion vaporizer. Subsequently, natural gas is injected into the transmission system.
