South Africa set for first LNG import terminal

South Africa is set to build its first LNG import facility at the west coast port of Saldanha Bay for around 20 billion rand (US$1.4bn), according to ‘Reuters’.

It’s thought the terminal is being developed to feed gas-to-power projects aimed at easing long-lasting supply shortages.

Reuters says several companies including Shell, Mitsubishi and Sasol are expected to bid for the 3,126 MW gas-to-power projects at the beginning of 2016.

Apparently, the plan is to build an import facility at, or close to, Saldanha Bay, the country’s deepest natural port and emerging oil and gas hub. It’s understood there will be pipelines supplying enough gas for power plants to supply thousands of industrial users and houses stretching almost 90 miles away to Cape Town.
