Port Director Mike Sellers says city is honoured to welcome annual gathering
As Port Director at the host port for GreenPort Congress 2026, it’s little surprise that Mike Sellers already has a high profile ahead of the 21st edition in October.
Add in Portsmouth International Port’s proactive embrace of sustainability in recent years, and the recent successful and historic launch of its shore power Sea Change project, and Sellers will have a lot to contribute at GreenPort.
Speaking to event organisers Mercator Media he said: “We’re truly honoured to be the host port for the GreenPort Congress. I’m not surprised we were selected because over the last few years we’ve embraced sustainability everywhere you can see. And the delegates will see this when they come to Portsmouth.
“We’ve got solar panels on all of our roofs. We’ve got solar canopies in the car lanes. Our new passenger terminal is fully sustainable. It uses seawater pumps to heat it, cool it, flush the toilets. We have solar for our energy, and we have living walls that purify the air. So, the delegates will see the amount of work that’s gone into Portsmouth as a green port itself.”
And he also highlighted the historic moment early this August when the LNG-electric hybrid ferry Guillaume de Normandie connected to Portsmouth’s fully operational shore power system for two hours – before becoming the first ever cross-Channel ferry to leave the UK using shore power.
Adding that the port estimated Sea Change would save 20,000 tons of CO2 by 2027, Sellers said: “So it’s a perfect time for the GreenPort Congress to be here in Portsmouth, especially as we open our shore power facilities and we go live with them. We’re really excited about being able to showcase that. But it’s not just that. It’s all of that sustainability that we’ve put into the port.”
