JN Port visit – finale to a great conference

The hosts, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) provided two speed boats to take the 110 global port delegates on a visit starting at the Gateway of India to see the environmental initiatives that have been introduced at India’s largest container port over the last decade.

JNPT’s Green Port Policy aims to protect the community from all harmful environmental impacts of port operations and to distinguish JN Port as a leader in environmental stewardship and compliance.

It aims to care for the environment not only within the port itself, but also in its related logistic activities. One example of this is the JNPT planting programme which has seen new mango and coconut trees spring up around the port.

JNPT also wants to engage and educate the employees and users of the port, along with the wider community, about sustainability. The port has its own community of workers who along with their families, live at the port in a special community – they even have their own school subsidised by the Trust.

The two day GreenPort South Asia conference, organised by Mercator Media Ltd, that took place from 20 to 22 March, brought together the international port community to share best sustainability practice both from India and around the world.
