Korea focuses on ports and the environment

Particularly with regard to harbour development, environmental problems relate to dredging and treating the dredged soil, while problems of making eco-friendly waterfront areas in the harbour areas are also being discussed. Recently consideration has been given to the scheme of utilizing harbor space for benchmarking Japanese recycling port. In particular, the scheme for reducing carbon emissions in port operations is being discussed in some detail. Taking these activities into consideration, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs recently put into place a low carbon, green-port , policy aimed at ensuring harbour development is undertaken with minimize environmental damage, utilizing harbour space in an eco-friendly way and implementing a low carbon and high efficiency harbour logistic system. The first target is to establish policies, which should be accomplished in this year; while it is planned to examine the development of a firm business-plan and legislation in the future.
