Push for energy efficiency in Indian ports

Vice president of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has called upon all the chairpersons and administrators of ports across the country to make changes to counter climate change.

Speaking to the chairpersons of major port trusts during ‘Chintan Baithak’, held by the Ministry of Shipping, the vice president stressed need to harness India’s coast, its 12 government-led major ports and 200 non-major ports for the sustainable growth and development of the country. He added that that India has an excellent opportunity for port-led development.

During the event, which addressed the challenges and growth and development of ports, Mr Naidu also appreciated the Sagarmala port-led development initiated by the Government of India and said that it was the best step towards creating greenfield ports, modernising existing ports, and empowering the coastal community by generating employment opportunities.

Boosting CSR

Mr Naidu asked the chairpersons enable ports to take the lead in upgrading infrastructure in the nearby localities in towns and lend support to promote local culture, arts, and heritage.

Describing community coastal community development as an essential component of port-led development, the vice President asked all administrators and managers to concentrate more on CSR activities and take care of local communities by providing skills to local youth to boost their employment opportunities.

The Vice president asked ports to take an active part in programmes such as the government-led environmental clean-up campaign Swachh Bharat, as well as extend support to local authorities in maintaining the cleanliness of cities and towns.
