Shore power drive in Indonesia
An Indonesian port management company will install shore power at its facilities to enable ships to connect to emissions-free electricity when docked.
PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (Pelindo III) aims to reduce logistics costs so that the competitiveness of national products increases.
Doso Agung, president director of Pelindo III, said the company has “signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PLN for PLN electricity surplus to be used through shore connections. This is a form of SOE synergy, one of the efforts to reduce logistics costs to increase logistics competitiveness”.
He added that the company is also looking into the installation of shore power at port/private interest terminal (TUKS).
Fuel efficiency
Using shore power provides up to 30-40% of fuel efficiency/savings for ships, said Pelindo III. It also supports government programmes related to reducing air pollution and noise pollution in port areas. As the engine is off during docking, this time can be used to carry out maintenance.
“From 35 shore connection points installed at 13 port and terminal locations in Pelindo III region, we are ready to invest Rp70bn and require a total electric power of 49,569kVA, and I see a very good potential to utilize the energy surplus. I hope that from PLN electricity, this acceleration will soon be able to accelerate the fulfillment of shore connection needs in several terminals and ports,” said Mr Agung.
PLN commitment
PLN said it has committed to supply electricity to meet electricity needs in 11 PELINDO III port/terminal locations to support port operations, with a medium voltage supply of 20kV and a total power of 29,892kVA.
The 11 ports include Bagendang Sampit, Kumai, Batulicin, and Banjarmasin ports in South Kalimantan; Tenau Kupang and Maumere in NTT; Sheets in NTB; Tanjung Intan and Tanjung Emas in DJTY; plus TPS and Semen Tuban in East Java.
