Maersk sees hard grind ahead
The managing director of Maersk Malaysia, has warned that the ‘recuperation’ of the transport of containers in 2010, although clearly taking place, will not be easy.
Omar Shamsie said that the transport of containers experienced a significant financial deterioration in 2009, but the arrival of larger ships and adjustments in capacity has helped reduce costs and adjust supply and demand.
He added that tariffs had gone up in the last four to five months, although had been at record lows and would therefore take time for them to completely recover. He therefore stressed that the situation remained uncertain despite signals of reactivation in the industry. Overall growth, he warned, would be modest.
