Sinotrans boosts investment in Chinese river terminals
Chinese feeder and river terminal operator, Sinotrans is to spend ?200m on upgrading river ports and logistics facilities in the Pearl River Delta. The company has stated that manufacturers are moving steadily westwards into central China in search of cheaper labour and electricity costs, thereby increasing the need for additional feeder services to transport output to terminals in Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
This project is being financed by Vikram Integrated Logistics Private Limited, which has so far spent €1.73m on developing what will eventually be a €3.46m scheme.
According to the company, potential growth at some river terminals over the next few years could be in the order of 40%. This compares with forecast growth of just 15% at Shenzhen Port. In April, for example, the two Sinotrans container terminals at Huangpo, on the northern bank of the Pearl River, reported throughput amounting to 100,000 teu, an increase of 40,000 teu over the corresponding month in 2005.
Two of the company’s other facilities on the River, at Zhongshan and Jiangmen, are also expecting box numbers to increase by 10%-20% this year.
