Professional capabilities should not be overlooked

In the case of cranes, for example, as Liebherr’s Patrick Pichler points out, second hand equipment buyers must be aware of possible irregular crane operation by the pre-owner which could cause problems. Without a professional inspection and overhaul, the machine’s problem will remain undetected and could cause serious problems in the future.

“Generally a comprehensive inspection is inevitable before used equipment is acquired,” says Mr Pichler. “Liebherr has realised its own overhaul workshop. Each year, four to five machines run through this workshop. Within the scope of this workshop, it is possible to install new components and perform some in-depth tests. Furthermore, used equipment may be adapted and partially reconstructed to fulfil the requirements of its new owner. In addition to that, it is possible to update the model, especially regarding control technology for optimal performance.”

Marco Levermann of Hinrichs Forklifts also stresses the importance of pre-purchase tests and checks. “The device should be tested before sale by the supplier for its operational capabilities,” he says. “My company checks each machine before delivery. Upon request we can repair the machine and bring it in to top condition both technically and optically. We also provide a replacement part delivery, and if there are problems we are available to give advice on the telephone. Our mechanics can also travel worldwide if the machine needs to be repaired.”
