Scenario tool worth its salt
The Virtual Terminal Optimisation (ViTO) tool developed by the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics allows container terminal operators to run scenarios involving a range of equipment, including straddle carriers.
Using the TOS, information about individual straddle carrier units can be analysed, allowing operators to optimise the assignment of individual machines to different working areas and smooth out potential and real bottlenecks.
Technical data as such is not being sought, although individual histories would allow better planning of maintenance to be undertaken.
The Eurogate Group, which has a number of straddle carrier operations, began using the ViTO tool earlier this year, and the ISL is in negotiations with a number of other big terminal operators.
