Simple identification is now old hat
Where gate systems in the past were limited to identification only,todays systems require container and truck optical characterrecognition (OCR), IMO label detection, video files, voice over IP,biometric identification of driver, damage inspection of the container,seal integrity – and so on, says Hi-Tech Solutions Phil Elovic.
“This requires increased efficiencies in order to produce and transmit significantly more information but under very tight time constraints so as not to bottleneck the truck traffic at the gates.”OCR fully automates the process, provides video and data logs and archiving of all traffic through the gate, and reduces the number of people in the yard – in turn reducing safety risks, he says.
HTS is reporting a trend to consolidate more and more terminal operations to a central command location, which may even consolidate several terminals. This is enabled by automated processing technologies such as OCR, says Mr Elovic.
