AI breakwater intrusion system launched
The Port of Taichung in Taiwan has launched a new Breakwater Entrance Intrusion Detection System (IDS) at its signal tower as part of moving towards becoming a smart port.
Entering service in early 2026, the port operator, Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC), states that the introduction of this equipment represents a milestone in its smart safety management and water security programme.
The IDS utilises customised software to monitor security at and around the port’s breakwater entrance, with high-definition and thermal imaging security cameras installed near the top of the signal tower. In addition, multi-sensor and Ai computing technology that deliver continuous, all-weather surveillance of vessel activity at the entrance to the port, is also in place.
There are acknowledged limitations to more conventional Vessel Traffic Systems (VTS), often due to using manual monitoring and having limitations in surveillance scope. Therefore, the approach from the Port of Taichung is to use AI-based automated alerting in its new smart inspection system, while also combining AI vessel image recognition with the port’s automatic identification system (AIS).
This means that IDS can identify and assess unknown vessels within its designated surveillance zone, while triggering response warnings when unauthorised vessels or unusual vessel movements are detected.
The automated security system reduces the operational burden on human monitoring and instead allows port staff to focus on responding to anomalous events rather than just routine surveillance. The new arrangement is seen to strengthen the safety of all vessels entering and leaving the port.
The Port of Taichung is Taiwan’s second-largest port, located on the west coast of Central Taiwan. It serves as a critical gateway for Central Taiwan’s industrial and commercial activities, notably as a major hub for bulk cargo, semi-conductors, and energy imports. The port’s entrance and inner channels are 350-400m wide, with water depths ranging from 16m to 18m.
