Fleet Cleaner’s large ship robo-clean
Ship hull cleaning company Fleet Cleaner successfully cleaned a number of container vessels with lengths of more than 350 metres during loading and unloading at terminals.
The organisation, which offers a robotic cleaning product for ship hulls, said it was able to conduct all of the cleans without causing downtime for shipping companies, even when combined with bunkering activities.
“The costs of fouling are often underestimated,” said Lodewijk Middelburg, commercial manager at Fleet Cleaner. “From our experience with shipping companies we see that these container vessels of over 350 metres can save around 14 tonnes of fuel per day. This is equivalent to saving a fully loaded bunker truck every two days.
“By keeping such a vessel clean, the daily CO2 emissions of over 10,000 average cars can be saved.”
The company’s robotic cleaning device is worked by an operator in the control room of the support vessel, which moors alongside the ship that is being cleaned at the time.
According to Fleet Cleaner, the cleaning service uses no divers to clean a vessel, always maintains a safe working distance from it and causes no environmental damage.
The company can currently deliver its hull cleaning service 24 hours a day to all ports in the Netherlands.
