Kalmar ASCs for DP World Brisbane

The new cranes will join a fleet of 14 Kalmar ASCs and will be installed in module one at the terminal. DP World Australia says the addition of module one is expected to deliver improved quay crane productivity and vessel schedule “integrity”, and will increase the number of waterside exchange lanes from 28 to 32, allowing additional freight to be transferred between the ASCs and straddle carriers at any given time.

“Productivity at our Fisherman Islands Terminal has grown from strength to strength,” said Paul Scurrah, managing director and CEO, DP World Australia. ”In the past six months we have seen higher waterside productivity and a more consistent operational performance from our ASC and straddle terminal. We are confident that trend will continue.”

DP World Australia launched its semi-automated terminal with seven operating modules in May 2014 and has since seen truck turnaround time and quay crane productivity improve significantly.

“The end result is greater buffering, allowing more productive and streamlined container transfer and providing capacity for future growth in container traffic,” added Glenn Wayne, general manager, operations, DP World Brisbane.

“It will also result in a 14% increase in yard stacking capacity, while providing an additional five truck lanes which will further reduce truck turn times across all shifts,” he concluded.

The majority of trucks are processed through the terminal in less than 30 minutes, and quay crane gross moves per hour are now above mode pre-implementation levels.

Under the semi-automated system, containers are transferred by manned shuttle carriers from the quay crane to a waterside exchange area at the front of a module serviced by ASCs.

Delivery of the cranes is expected in January 2017.
