Kalmar to deliver 19 shuttles to new APM terminal
Kalmar has been awarded a contract by APM Terminals to deliver 19 hybrid shuttle carriers to the operator’s newest container terminal, under construction in Vado, Italy.
The delivery, due to take place in 2017, will make APM Terminals’ new deepwater Vado container terminal the world’s first container terminal to employ an entirely hybrid shuttle carrier fleet.
Managing director of APM Terminals Vado, Carlo Merli said: “Environmental sustainability and optimised productivity are priorities for both operations and equipment selection in APM Terminals Vado.
“The enhanced hybrid power enabled by the Kalmar’s shuttle carriers will result in an estimated 30% reduction in fuel consumption, as well as a reduction of an estimated 50 tonnes of CO2 annually per unit, compared with conventional diesel and electric-powered shuttle carriers.”
The Kalmar HSH240 hybrid shuttle carriers will help APM Terminals to optimise the productivity of its terminal by decoupling waterside and landside operations.
They have also been designed with an advanced regenerative energy system that converts energy from operational braking and lowering of the spreader into electric power, which is captured and stored through new and innovative battery technology.
The Port of Vado is expected to be fully operational by January 2018, with the ability to handle 18,000 teu vessels.
