Kalmar unveils reachstacker solution

Kalmar has launched a new drive train system embedded into its Gloria reachstacker said to offer ‘greener’ operations, with 40% less fuel consumption and reduced exhaust emissions.

Launched today at TOC Europe in Rotterdam, the K-Motion solution is said to increase precision in both low and high drive speed modes, with the smart control system splitting the power to increase overall drive and lift efficiency.

The less efficient torque converter has been replaced by hydrostatic technology, meaning the throttle works as an actual speed throttle. Kalmar says this combination of hydrostatic and mechanical technologies results in more efficient transmission and allows for a downsized engine, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions by up to 40%.

Stefan Johansson, director, sales and marketing, Kalmar reachstackers and empty container handlers, told Port Strategy: “All of our customers are focusing on reducing emissions and lowering the cost of power and of course with even stricter environmental regulations, it’s always a priority.”

“Within Kalmar we have a long-term commitment to developing efficient sustainable technology, which includes the possible application of K-Motion across our range of reachstackers in the future,” he added.

In addition, the joystick is also said to deliver more precise driving, making daily operations safer and helping to avoid accidents, damaged cargo and driver fatigue.

The Kalmar Gloria DRG450 reachstacker with the first piece of equipment launched with the new solution. The maximum engine speed is 1700rpm and is designed to function with a lower decibel output. With the addition of K-Motion, Kalmar says noise reduction is further improved.
