Konecranes introduces first hybrid reach stacker

Global lifting equipment provider, Konecranes, has developed what it calls the world’s first hybrid reach stacker for container handling.

The SMV 4531 TB5 HLT, which has a lifting capacity of 45 tonnes, features a hybrid diesel/electric driveline, electrified hydraulic lifting system and super capacitor based energy storage.

Konecranes says the new product, which electrifies all flows of energy across the driveline, the hydraulic lifting system and the energy storage system, will reduce fuel consumption and emissions by at least 30%, while improving performance acceleration.

Its hybrid driveline consists of a diesel engine, which runs at constant RPM for optimum fuel efficiency, an electrical generator and an electrical traction motor which provides the propulsion and generates electrical energy when braking. This minimises the need for mechanical braking, saving energy.

Unlike a conventional reach stacker, Konecranes’ product electrically drives and controls the hydraulic pumps, the speed of which can be controlled independently of the engine speed. The return flow of hydraulic cylinders is then fed back through the pumps to regenerate electrical energy, instead of being converted into heat.

In addition, its super capacitor system for energy storage is connected to the truck’s electrics, allowing it to store electrical energy and boost the diesel-powered electrical generator at times of peak power demand.

The new hybrid reach stacker is currently undergoing field testing at the Port of Helsingborg’s container terminal.
