Land acquisition eases inland start-ups

In bolster its inland ambitions, Rotterdam Port Authority has bought up land for inland terminal development to lease to private companies involved in the logistics sector, all the while retaining its landlord role.

Port spokesperson, Minco van Heezen, comments: “We have done this so far in three cases (all in the Netherlands) and are in talks in respect of a fourth. By doing this, we make it easier for terminals to start up, since there is less fixed capital needed, and also strengthen the acceptance of and trust in the terminal, given that public authorities usually appreciate our expertise and have trust in us.

“The port authority and the national rail infrastructure authority, ProRail, are also participating in KeyRail, the management company of the Betuwe rail corridor, which handles significant rail freight flows to and from the port.

“We got involved in this project to enable and mediate between ProRail, the Ministry of Transport and private railway companies,” says Mr Van Heezen. The port authority has even gone so far as to take an equity stake in KeyRail. In addition, the port authority retains a shareholding in the Omani Port of Sohar management company and also in a cargo handling operation there.
