Smart processes speeds customs process
US Customs and Border Protection have used Smartphone technology to boost security and customs operations even further.
In the last two years, two notable innovations have been introduced in connection with the Smartphone.
The Automated Targeting System – Mobile is a scanning peripheral that allows CBP officers and border patrol agents to scan the machine-readable area on travel documents. The system is attached to the Smartphone and can access CBP enforcement systems.
US Customs and Border Protection have reported that this device has been a success, since it has led to discoveries of illegal drugs, weapons and unreported currency.
In September 2011, ELMOcargo (Enforcement Link to Mobile Operations) was trialled at Port Everglades, again via the Smartphone. ELMOcargo can access cargo targeting information and allows field personnel to release cargo in real time at the conclusion of the inspection – the real time factor hastens the process and averts any potential delays.
