Terminal opportunity

ITSA operates at Pier 1 in Augusta, but together with the port Authority of Augusta, is looking to build cargo volume in line with the opportunity presented by the development of Pier 2 which united with the adjacent Pier 1 will comprise a terminal complex eminently suited to fulfilling the role of a container transhipment hub.

Pier 1 features a quay length of 300m with a draft alongside of 14.5m to 15m with a landside area of 100,00sq m and Pier 2, which is scheduled for imminent construction, will feature two quays, one 460m in length and the other 240m with a depth alongside ranging from 16 to 17m. Currently quayside handling equipment on Pier 1 comprises three heavy duty mobiles but tenders have been issued for quay reinforcement and for the delivery of two new – post-Panamax ship-to-shore gantries for the account of the port authority. Quayside equipment at Pier 2 will be for the terminal operator’s account but with subsidies of up to 40%.

ITSA has former experience in the container sector undertaking transhipment operations for a major Asian line. ITSA management further point out that in addition to modern facilities its business model has been developed with the support of labour to offer an operation able to compete with the lowest cost transhipment centres in the Mediterranean. Further advantages highlighted are the port of Augusta’s role as a major port for bunkers and its location in a safe bay offering minimum deviation from the main east west shipping lanes.

It is understood that ITSA is prepared to accept a relatively low cost of entry by a strategic partner commensurate with its ability to deliver new cargo volume.
