The Green Machine
Kalmar has introduced the first all-electric RTG, the E-One. With the existing emission- and noise-free Kalmar Zero-Emission RTG and now the new E-One, Kalmar says it is not only able to meet the latest environmental demands but also the requirements for operational productivity and life-time cost efficiency. E-One is without the need for hydraulics and is suited to any operation around the world.
E-One features a lowemission diesel engine and is fitted with electric trolley, wheel turning and spreader. It contains fewer critical mechanical components and therefore provides less opportunity for mechanical failures. A service interval of up to 1,000 hours for both the crane and the engine is unmatched by all other brands. It also offers fuel savings of up to 30% based on new intelligence in the RTG movements: the crane speeds (gantry, hoisting) are adjusted according to the load under the spreader. Conventional RTGs’ hydraulics run constantly whereas in the EOne electrical power can be used only when needed.
E-One’s all-electric and maintenance-free load stability control (antisway and stabliser) add to reliability and help the crane driver to work faster and more accurately.
Other features include:
All-electric wheel turning and gantry drive: There is no need for the commonly used hydraulic turning and locking system for wheel positioning. This minimises the need for maintenance. In conventional RTGs, the separate locking system for wheel positions can get easily stuck and paralyse the machine. Gantry wheels are driven directly without the chain, requiring less maintenance than in conventional chain-driven models. Gantry speed is adjusted based on the load under the spreader. This results in faster operations and fuel savings.
All-electric trolley: The trolley is a single-level design allowing easy access to all components for ease of maintenance. The Positive Drive? ensures that the trolley always runs parallel to the rails and there is no diagonal movement or sliding. As malfunctions in trolley movement are eliminated, the machines record higher productivity rates. Many other makes use the friction-based traction system which is lacking these advantages.
A single hoist drum design also guarantees safe handling even with eccentric loads and twinlifting. The hoisting speed is adjusted according to the load under the spreader, resulting in faster operations and savings in fuel consumption.
2004 was a good year for Kalmar RTGs. Its latest RTG orders include: ten 16-wheel models for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; five 16-wheel units to Liscont, Portugal; four eightwheel models each to BCT Gdynia in Poland, Kumport in Turkey and Djibouti; one 16wheel unit to Petrolesport at the Port of St Petersburg;
and six 16-wheel models to Kenya Port Authority.
