Earthrace Eco powerboat

Earthrace is a 78ft wavepiercing trimaran that runs exclusively on biodiesel, and has a net zero carbon footprint, making it one of the world’s most environmentallyfriendly powerboats. “For the next 40 days we’re going to be living on adrenaline,” says skipper Pete Bethune, who auctioned off his home and sold his company to fund the building of the £1.5 million boat. The route takes the boat across the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans as it thunders 24,000 nautical miles along the planet’s circumference at a maximum speed of 40 knots. If they succeed, Earthrace will be the first boat to break the record using only renewable fuel. The boat has many additional ‘green’ credentials, such as low-emission engines, non-toxic anti-foul and efficient hull design. “We aim to show the world that the best technology can also be sustainable,” says Bethune. Earthrace is run as a not for- profit venture, with a boat, ground and London HQ crew made up of international volunteers.
