Eurogate becomes environmental partner of the City of Hamburg
Eurogate may now officially call itself “Environmental partner of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg”. The Urban Planning and Environment Office bestow this title on companies that demonstrate voluntary and systematic commitment to the environment. For Eurogate, protecting resources has for a long time been a priority of project implementation.
Nevertheless, the topic of the environment is gaining increasing importance for the port corporation. To facilitate coordination of all environmental concerns within the group, the company appointed an in-house environmental management officer in September 2008. In the following, examples of some of the environmental measures Eurogate realised between 2006 and 2008 and that earned it the title “Environmental partner” are described: 1. Building energy: Insulation measures have helped to save 50 per cent of the heating energy requirement. A wood scrap incineration plant has also been put into operation. 2. Savings in the field of IT: Experts believe that the Internet consumes the same amount of energy as global air travel. With this in mind, Eurogate has consolidated the numerous different servers that were in operation as stand-alone devices onto just two modern Vmware servers. 3. Carrier technology: In the past three years, Hamburg Container Terminal has invested in 84 new straddle carriers with diesel-electric engines. This generates savings of around one million litres of diesel and 3,000 tonnes of CO2 accordingly. Engine encapsulation is further intended to suppress noise emissions. In addition, Eurogate also awarded its own research contract in 2008. The Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrtwesen mbH research association in Aachen determined for Eurogate what fuel savings can be made by switching to hybriddrive carriers. For its container cranes, Eurogate has for many years utilised a technology which allows 20 to 25 per cent of the energy generated when the spreader is moved to be fed back into the grid and thus made available for other consumers. This reduces CO2 emissions by some 4000 tonnes annually.
