Cecilia Carlsson of Gothenburg’s corporate communcations department told GreenPort magazine, “This initiative will make us the first port to make available LNG bunkering during normal loading and unloading operations – the ships won’t have to deviate to the LNG terminal.”

The port is investing in the necessary infrastructure in conjunction with LNG GOT, a collaboration between Swedish energy company Göteborg Energi and gas corporation Gasnor.

“The next decade is expected to have significantly more environmental restrictions for shipping, the emissions will have to be reduced significantly and the need for new alternative fuel for shipping will increase,” the companies said in a joint statement. “The vision is to be the natural choice of fuel supplier in Gothenburg. By choosing liquefied natural gas, we create a sustainable alternative fuel at sea.”
