Kudos for eco friendly port construction

The Årets Bygge 2021 (Construction of the year 2021) prize is awarded for is for building projects that have performed outstandingly in all five categories: Notably, sustainability, working environment, time/quality/budget, technology/innovation and collaboration.

“Together we succeeded in meeting the time schedule on budget in this complex project, while at the same time prioritising safety and working environment,” said Karl Lagerlöf, director of strategic port development at Ports of Stockholm.

Complex construction

Norvik Port is several complex constructions in one. Roads, bridges and buildings have been connected together with a railway line, tunnel and world class cargo terminal.

A four kilometre-long railway line has been built to the port, as well as a railway yard, new roads, several bridges, a tunnel through the hillside, six major buildings, the port’s own water reservoir and electrical power installations of small city capacity.

The judges particularly praised the project’s budget and time planning, in addition to the impressive collaboration of the 40 different contractors involved.

Norvik Port consists of two major port areas – a container terminal and a terminal for rolling goods. Both areas opened in 2020.

It has been built to ensure the sustainable supply of goods to the entire Stockholm region and also to be a model for safe, efficient and eco-friendliness operations, meeting the needs of the region in the future.

It is the first completely new major freight port to be built in Sweden for decades and covers an area of 44 hectares.
