Le Havre incentivise green shipping

The ten cleanest shipping companies who comply with the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) and agree to sign up to the GPMH incentive framework will be rewarded with a 10% reduction in port dues.

Green shipping will become even more of an issue next year when MSC’s new terminal at Port 2000 will make the port a major hub in Europe, meaning far more port traffic.

Mr Hervé Cornède, commercial and marketing director of GPMH said to GreenPort: “It is important for the port of Le Havre to enforce this ESI action as the port signed the World Port Climate Initiative charter in cooperation with other European ports to support the development of “green calls”. It forms part of GPMH’s overall environmental port strategy.

As vessels call in at the port of Le Havre before (or after) sailing to North-European ports, it was essential to set up this “green” action to reduce our impacts on the environment in order to satisfy our customers (shipping lines, shippers, logisticians) who work in favour of the sustainable development of the overall transport chain.”
