Peel Ports signs up to the sustainable benefits of rail

The new service with DB Cargo will provide shipping lines, forwarders, tank operators and cargo-owners with a more sustainable and efficient way of getting their goods between the quayside at Liverpool and Scotland.

“We know that cargo owners are looking for more efficient ways of getting their goods from A to B, and this rail freight service provides them with a simpler, more cost effective and environmentally friendly way of doing that,” said Jouke Schaap, container director at Peel Ports.

Reducing trucks

The service is due to begin on 8 May, with goods loaded in Liverpool and transferred to Mossend terminal in Glasgow, before onward delivery to destinations across Scotland.

DB Cargo said that the new service should reduce the need for HGVs to travel thousands of miles on British roads each week. It fits with Peel Ports’ vision to offer customers a seamless end-to-end service resonates and higher standards of service and flexibility for its customers.

The new service will comprise of up to 30 wagons and is expected to carry over 40 containers per trip initially running for three days a week with DB Cargo UK providing the rail haulage.

Peel Ports said that it will also provide expansion options for importers and exporters to minimise cost, congestion and carbon emissions.
