PEMA seeks to enhance industry efficiency

“We hope the survey will provide operators with accurate information on which to base their decision making, and will thus lead to greater efficiencies throughout the industry,” says Ottonel Popesco, PEMA president. Although the container industry is more than 50 years old, reliable market data for many types of small and intermediate port handling equipment had, until now, been scarce. An issue PEMA pledged to address when the association was first established in 2004. The survey focused on reach stackers, FLTs (both heavy lift and empty container handling), and terminal tractors and trailers, with manufacturers supplying information on deliveries made in 2006 and 2007. Data was collected from the Americas, Asia Pacific and EMEA (Europe/Middle East/Africa), and consolidated into global totals. The survey recorded a high response level, with some 95 percent of deliveries being included. Information provided for the survey was treated with the utmost confidentiality and handled under strict guidelines established by legal counsel. Only consolidated totals have been published, and copies of the completed report released to all participating companies and to PEMA members. The association intends to expand its provision of market information by conducting further surveys, and establishing industry guidelines on environmental controls, port security, and safety standards.
