Pisa helps enhance inland waterway role
The Italian city of Pisa is the latest European city to join an initiative that aims to enhance the role of inland waterway transport and set up better dialogue between port and waterway authorities.
Pisa joins Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Paris and Vienna, who last year signed up to the Connecting with Waterways: a Capital Choice charter.
The aim of the charter is to find new sustainable solutions for freight supply and distribution challenges by using the inland waterways more between the six cities. It also aims to realise the EU ambition of achieving carbon neutral logistics in major urban centres by 2030.
It was set up by Minister Brigitte Grouwels of the Brussels-Capital Region in cooperation with the European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP) and Inland Navigation Europe (INE).
Urbanisation not only requires an increased need for public transport, but also a growing need for sustainable freight transport solutions – which is where the charter comes in.
