Port of Kotkas new EcoQuay opens in February
The Port of Kotkas EcoQuay concept will be operational at the beginning of February 2010 – the EcoQuay was adopted taking into account several environmental aspects in designing, constructing and using the quay.
In the first phase the quay is about to serve the transportation of 35,000 pipes. The new quay will be the first quay in Finland for which emissions in use phase were calculated, with a new port emission model.
The quay has only minimum lighting. Requests for additional light can easily be made with an automatic GSM system. The individuals operating in the quay only need a mobile phone linked to the system. As a result, both energy and money are conserved. The quay has a total waste management plan and all recyclable waste is sorted. The vessels visiting the quay have the possibility to direct access to the sewer pipeline, which takes the wastewater directly to nearby wastewater treatment plan. Rainwater is controlled through a sewer into the sea. Noise and dust are also minimized. The strength of the new quay is its multiuse and good hinterland connections via road and rail.
The implementation of the quay was very fast: the environmental permitting process took only four months whereas in most cases the process can take several years in Finland if there is an appeal. In this case, good co-operation with environmental authorities throughout the process ensured decisions were made without delay.

Control idea: In every lightmast (30-40m) there are 9-24 lights. All lights are connected in three groups, so every mast can be controlled in three parts. Those parts (lights) are situated symmetrically in the mast. BMS System changes the default part (1/3) in every month. The default part is controlled by a light sensor. This means that the lights can be used evenly thereby increasing service time.
Building management system controls lights with light sensor, time and mo-bile phone. When the default power is on, it can have more light using a mobile phone to send SMS message. The SMS order puts the lights on in full mode in certain areas, and an area can be selected where more light is needed and when required turned off completely. The BMS system also measures how long time each lights has been use and provides an information report for service and faults.
Equipment: There are main lighting distribution boards in the each transformer building which power the lights which are equipped with 1000W natrium solidium lamps which have asymmetric light emission.
