Port of Venice for #myportforTurku
This spring, the European Commission Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, DG MARE, launched a photo competition where European citizens were invited to share photos of their favourite ports on social media.
This year’s Greenport Congress host, the Port of Venice was actively involved as one of the sponsors.
DGMARE’s initiative #myportforTurku aimed to showcase some of the 3,000 nautical, fishing, historical, cruise, inland and shipping ports connecting Europe in the run up to European Maritime Day held from 18 to 22 May.
The competition was hugely successful and DGMARE received 579 pictures, representing 166 ports, by 234 authors from 24 countries.
The 50 best pictures selected by an international jury went on display in Turku during the European Maritime Day and then in several other European locations throughout 2016.
Port of Venice will host the 50 top pictures at this year’s Greenport Cruise and Congress conference being held in the city from 11 to 14 October.
The port was one of the five most represented ports and one of the 33 ports represented in the exhibition.
One of the entries by Mr Riccardo Roiter (one of his pictures appears on the front cover of the autumn issue of Greenport magazine) was among the 10 most voted by the European Maritime Day participants and won a special prize.
