UK port marks charity climate initiative

Portsmouth International Port’s terminal building will host a free event on 28 March focusing on various ways to switch to electric energy in support of WWF’s Earth Hour, when the world switches off its lights at 8:30pm as a call for action to the climate crisis.

Speaking about the event at the council-owned port, Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, leader of Portsmouth City Council said: “We are facing a climate emergency and as a city we have to take responsibility and take direct action to combat this critical issue.

“Portsmouth International Port is the UK’s most successful municipal port and we now want to become one of the first zero emission ports. Events like this one allow the public to discover how they can also reduce their impact on the environment, alongside saving money in the long run.”

Local companies including including Pure Green Energy will promote green energy alternatives during the event from 10am to 10pm.

Portsmouth Climate Action Board and Extinction Rebellion will also be in attendance.

Cllr Dave Ashmore, the council’s cabinet member for environment and climate change, added: “When we declared a climate emergency last March, we set ourselves the ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. It’s great to see all parts of the council pulling together to do their bit.”
