12 in the race for Prat Quay

A total of 12 national and international companies have presented expressions of interest in operating the new container terminal being built on Prat Quay, Barcelona. An award is due to be made by the end of the first half of 2006, which should mean the terminal will commence operations in January 2008.

It will be capable of handling 9m tonnes of cargo annually, although this will be extended to 15m tonnes depending on demand.

The minimum capital for the project has been established at ?50m with the concession to be for a period of not more than 30 years and up to ?300m on infrastructure and equipment to be spent during that period.
