An investment of several hundred million euros is to go into the new terminal, which will have an initial capacity of a minimum of six billion cu metres per annum and will be expanded in phases. Guaranteed longterm agreements for throughput are one of the main conditions for the investment. There are also plans in place by a third party for a power station in Europoort – it is expected that the initiatives will be combined.

Algeciras has awarded a €1.2m contract to Cyes to undertake key environmental dredging in front of the beach at Los Ladrillos and within El Saladillo harbour following complaints by residents regarding the level of pollution. At the latter site, 7,220 cu metres of sediment will be extracted and used as infill on the extension of the Isla Verde quay, while 37,580 cu metres of extracted material from the former will also be used for the same project.
