CONTAINER MILLIONAIRES HAVE CLOSE RACE

The UK may be top of the Rotterdam container customer throughput league table, but China is snapping at its heels.

P&O’s investment in Shellhaven on the north bank of the Thames at Thurrock, will be to the tune of £700m to make the former oil refinery Britain’s largest container port. Phased development is planned out for the next decade and beyond. Another £700m is earmarked for the adjacent business park, which is to be self-financing and operate in partnership with Shell UK.

The UK claims almost 1.2 million TEUs, but China is only 175,000 TEUs behind, actually beating the UK if only incoming flow is considered.

Elsewhere movement is positive. Russia’s growth is up sharply by 104%, attributable in part to a lack of facilities elsewhere. Brazil’s 34% rise can thank Europe’s increasing fancy for its exports.
