Crisis deepens at Genova
Trade unions representing road haulage companies in Genova, Italy, are taking out a class action against PSA International, claiming damages in excess of ¢ 5m ($7.7m) because of the decision to temporarily stop the movement of export containers from Voltri Terminal Europa (VTE).
The plug was introduced on January 23 and was, in part, the result of transport strikes earlier this year and higher than normal volumes passing through the terminal. A customs go-slow and unseasonal high winds further exacerbated the problems.
Not only have road haulage companies started legal action, the port authority is also considering taking PSA to court claiming the image of Genova has been damaged by the inability of VTE to function correctly.
Indeed, the president of the port authority has held crisis meetings with PSA’s managing director, Eddie Teh, to try and find ways to resolve the worsening situation.
