EU gives Granadilla go-ahead

This approval has been made despite the negative findings reported in an environmental study; however, these were overruled because of a lack of suitable alternative sites on the island. The commission noted that the existing port at Santa Cruz would be incapable of absorbing forecast traffic growth in the next few years, with existing installations already operating close to saturation levels. The new facility will handle containers, dry cargo and general cargo. Compensatory environmental measures will nevertheless have to be adopted.
