Grangemouths great aims
The Port of Grangemouth is expanding its container handling capability. Forth Ports, operator of the container terminal at Grangemouth, has added two new quayside gantries, upgraded the terminals landside handling equipment, expanded the terminal area and upgraded maintenance facilities.
This new investment follows on from consistent increases in throughput rising from 220,000 teu in 2004, 235,000 teu in 2005 to an estimated 236,000 teu for 2006.
Annual terminal capacity is now put at 220,000 containers per annum but these improvements still do not solve the issue of improved windows of access for vessels.
Container handling in Grangemouth remains tidally constrained and as such can pose significant difficulties to operators, especially the one of having to wait for the tide to exit the terminal.
The number of services routed via Grangemouth has nevertheless grown steadily with Forth Ports hinting further new additions are on the horizon.
