Leixoes splashes out on infrastructure

Leif Wallin, president of trailer handling for the Finland-headquartered company, confirmed that Kalmar is “involved in hybrids in a couple of projects”, working with the US Environmental Protection Agency in the ports of Long Beach and New Jersey.

Leixoes Port Authority (APDL) is to invest ¢26m on upgrading infrastructure. Both the turning circle and the access channel in the inner port are to be deepened, while the mobile bridge linking two neighbouring areas is to be changed; the current one hinders the passage of large ships. The works are in anticipation of the arrival of Panamax vessels as from 2006, which need a draught of 12 metres and not the 10 metres currently available.
