LONDON GETS GREEN GONG

The project, to be funded by the government and the municipality of Rotterdam, aims to expand the port’s existing 10,000ha by 10% via land reclamation by 2010. The court, which tests laws and approves government projects, said it could not give the green light to the expansion plan because of environmental worries, a port spokesman said.

The PERS system is a European standard to help ports comply with environmental recommendations. PLA earned the certificate by, among other things, setting up environmental indicators with targets to measure progress.
