Ports directive confusion
Industry has once again withdrawn support for the controversial port services directive put forward by the European Union. The beleaguered proposal suffered the blow following almost ludicrous scenes in the EU Parliament.
Rotterdam is investing an average of €150m per annum in the period 2002-2012.
EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot has pledged to press on with an amended version of the directive in spite of widespread condemnation. He told journalists in Brussels that he hoped an amended version would go through the European Parliament in January, after a confused voting session among Euro MPs led to the European Sea Ports Association requesting the directive be scrapped altogether. The directive has now passed unamended to the plenary.
