Post-Panamax units planned for Gdynia
Speaking on the occasion of the delivery of a new Panamax dimension quayside container gantry to ICTSIs Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) in Gdynia, Tom Falknor, president, BCT, unveiled the terminals further plans: ” Two post-Panamax cranes are to be purchased, ” explained Falknor, ” in order to meet terminal user requirements over the longer term.
The dominance of Maersk can be seen in figures released by Algeciras port authority covering January and February 2005 during which throughput at the port amounted to 501,514 TEUs.
“With our existing Panamax dimension container cranes we already have a significant comfort zone in terms of handling today’s and tomorrow’s container vessels active in the Baltic trade and the post-Panamax units will further strengthen our hand in this respect. If the Baltic does see direct services, larger vessel types, hub initiatives or any other similar development, BCT will be ready, ” said Falknor.
The new Panamax crane has an outreach of 38.5 metres and a lift capacity of up to 60 tons. Its acquisition forms part of the US$100m terminal upgrade programme BCT has underway.
